2013 Terroir Syrah
The Hogue Cellars winemakers craft the Terroir line to showcase wines that are unique as varietals and that express the singularity of esteemed vineyard sites in Washington state. Made in limited quantities, these wines are sold only at the winery tasting room and by mail. The 2013 Syrah starts out with luscious aromas of cherry, strawberry, grapes, black pepper, anise, and spice, with touches of vanilla and cream. Flavors of fresh strawberry are rounded out by dark chocolate notes. This Snipes Mountain Syrah is full of massive richness and dense fruit, with a gamey edge. Pair with grilled salmon, pork, or lighter cream dishes. Or enjoy this Syrah by itself on a warm summer night
VINTAGE AND VINEYARDS
The 2013 growing season saw above-average temperatures, providing the perfect conditions for red grapes throughout Washington state. The dry, warm conditions led to the grapes fully ripening and developing the excellent varietal flavors we know and expect from the region. The grapes were harvested primarily from Roskamp Vineyard in Snipes Mountain (92%), with a small amount coming from Andrews Vineyard in Horse Heaven Hills (8%) for added color and weight. This was the first year in some time that The Hogue Cellars had made a varietal Syrah. Given its excellent quality from this vintage, the winemakers decided this would be a great year to showcase Washington State Syrah.
The grapes were hand harvested during daylight hours, to take advantage of the sun’s heat for warm, effective macerations. The grapes were crushed, destemmed, and fermented in small bins. The wine rested for 15 months in a mixture of old and new American oak barrels before being bottled in mid-August.
